Membership FAQ

Q: Who can join the Seattle Police Athletic Association?

A: Any adult 21 years of age or older with no record of violent crime, felony, harassment, involuntary mental health committment, or recent DUI. See our Membership Application for more details.

Q: Do I need a member or police officer to sponsor me?

A: No, anyone can apply. You do not need to know a member or police officer. You are invited to call or come by the range pro shop during regular business hours, no appointment necessary, to meet the range staff, ask about the facility, and fill out or drop off a membership application.

Q: Why is a criminal background check part of the application process?

A: We value the safety and privacy of our membership. We think you, as a member, would want to know that the people shooting at the bench next to you have the integrity to handle firearms in a safe, responsible, lawful, and appropriate manner. The background check helps to assure that. This sets the SPAA apart from public ranges.

Q: Is using the range expensive?

A: There are no per-visit range usage fees or required purchases. Your only cost is your annual membership fee, which allows you unlimited visits, plus a modest non-refundable initiation/application fee when you first apply (waived for sworn SPD). The annual fee is comparable to membership fees at Seattle area public ranges. Shoot just once a month and you’ll save money compared to using a Seattle-area public range as a non-member. Membership fees are discounted for SPD sworn officers, SPD reserve officers, SPD civilian employees, non-SPD government first responders, corrections officer, active military, spouses, and seniors 60+. Law Enforcement Group memberships are also available. See our Membership Fee Schedule for more details.

Q: As a member, can I bring a spouse, adult guests, or children to the range? Are family memberships available?

A: You must always check in at the Pro Shop with your spouse, guests, or children. Adult spouses and guests (up to 2) are permitted, though excessive repeat visits may result in the spouse or guest being invited to apply for membership and otherwise denied access. Well-behaved children under the continuous close supervision of their well-behaved parents may be allowed at the discretion of the Range Officer. The SPAA facility is not a playground; there is no place where children may be left unattended, including the picnic grounds. Family memberships, per se, are not available. Adult family members 21 or over who want to use the range on their own or as more than an infrequent guest will need to apply for membership (including background check) and pay their annual fee individually. Spouses do enjoy a significantly discounted annual fee.

Q: What happens if I let my membership lapse?

A: Your annual renewal fee is due by the end of the calendar month of your anniversary date. There is a 2 month grace period on renewals. After 2 months, you will be charged a $10 late renewal fee. After 6 months, your membership will be cancelled and you will have to re-apply in full. Note: currently we do not have a system that would permit automatic renewal by credit card, and we do not have an automated system to send out renewal reminders. You will need to stop by in person to re-sign a waiver and pay your renewal fee to avoid having your membership cancelled.
