An Introduction to the Seattle Police Athletic Association

The Seattle Police Athletic Association, Inc. (SPAA) is a non-profit, membership-based organization. Its membership includes Seattle Police Department sworn and retired officers, SPD civilian employees, other law enforcement and first responders, and private citizens from a variety of backgrounds. The SPAA is entirely separate from, and independent of, the Seattle Police Department and the City of Seattle.

The SPAA was established during World War II, originally as a physical fitness and marksmanship facility for SPD officers. Today, both law enforcement and civilian members enjoy the use of the facility’s rifle and pistol ranges, its picnic grounds, and its other services, including a members-only Pro Shop.

Members must pass a criminal background check. All members undergo training in range safety, procedures, and rules. Ranges are covered and employ modern construction techniques that include the use of tall berms and safety baffles (sky shields) to block bullets from departing the range, as well as dissipate noise.

FAQ

Q: I can’t seem to find the range. Is it hidden? Where is it exactly?

A: It’s probably the best-kept shooting sports secret in the Seattle area. Please note that the SPAA range is not a police station, police facility, or commercial enterprise, and doesn’t look like one. It’s down a driveway between two low industrial buildings off of East Marginal Way. Here’s a picture:

Q: So there’s really an outdoor pistol and 200-yard rifle range in Seattle?

A: With Seattle being as dense as it is, you might think there’d be no room for a 200-yard outdoor rifle range - and you’d be right. Technically, it’s in Tukwila, on a relatively isolated, wooded parcel between railroad tracks, power lines, and a light industrial area just south of Boeing Field airport, about half a mile south of the border with Seattle. The land has been used by SPAA for this purpose for over 75 years.

Q: How do I become a member?

A: Please see our Membership Info page.

Q: Are the Pro Shop and Range open to the public?

A: The public is welcome to come to the Pro Shop to learn about the facility and meet the range staff. Sales are restricted to members only, due to the non-profit tax status of the SPAA. The Range and other facilities are for use only by members and their invited guests.

Q: As a member, can I buy reloading components at the Pro Shop?

A: The Pro Shop stocks a limited selection of powders, primers, and other reloading components, as well as loaded ammunition. The shop is, however, subject to the same market forces as a retail store. Call or visit to find out what’s available. Reloading your cartridges at the range, however, is not permitted.

Q. Do you have a skeet or trap range?

A: Not anymore. Historic photos show a skeet range, and there used to be a trap range, but these areas have been repurposed. Shotguns may be used on the rifle range, but they must fire only rifled slugs.
